Dutch is a key language in our agency’s activities, both as a source and target language. In the field of translation, the relevance of the Dutch language is without question. We can begin by highlighting the use of this language in the commercial and economic sphere. The reason for this is that the Netherlands occupies a leading position in world trade. They have become the fifth largest exporter of goods in the world. Specifically refined petroleum oils and technology brands such as WeTransfer or Philips.

DUTCH IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

It is worth mentioning that both the Netherlands and Belgium are founding members of the European Union, with Belgium as the home of its main institutions. As such, they are also nations that play an important role within the European political framework. It is a geographical centre of intense political and legislative activity. Translation and interpreting, especially sworn and legal-economic translation and interpreting, play a very important role in this field.

DUTCH LANGUAGE PROFESSIONALS

The intervention of professional translators and interpreters to facilitate proper communication in the field of these commercial and political relations is of utmost importance. Moreover, despite the increasing number of Dutch speakers worldwide, it is still difficult to find professional translators from and into Dutch. Therefore, it is highly recommended to seek support from a translation agency that guarantees a correct and professional translation.

SCOPE OF DUTCH

The language is usually associated in the first instance with the Netherlands or Belgium. However, Dutch is also the official language of Suriname, a small, as yet little-known South American nation that is home to no less than eight different cultures living in harmonious coexistence. Today, it is a largely undiscovered tourist destination, especially because of its rich multiculturalism. This is where the importance of breaking down language barriers through translation and interpretation lies, in order to enjoy and take advantage of the wide range of possibilities it offers.

WHERE IS DUTCH SPOKEN?

Dutch is one of the Germanic languages belonging to the Indo-European language family. In some countries this language is more commonly known as Hollandic. This is not correct, as Hollandic is actually one of the dialects of the Dutch language. It has 38 million speakers worldwide, of which 23 million are native speakers, making it the third Germanic language with the most native speakers. And although it is an official language in only two countries, the Netherlands and the Republic of Suriname, the Dutch-speaking community is spread all over the world.

In addition to being the co-official language in Belgium, Aruba, the Dutch Caribbean, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, there are also speaker communities where Dutch is considered a mother tongue in countries such as France, Canada, the United States, Indonesia and the Lower Rhine region of Germany.

In this context, it is also important to highlight the work of the Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch Language Union). It was created in order to set the common language standard for the Netherlands, Suriname and the Flanders region of Belgium. Its current work is the protection and promotion of the Dutch language, especially in the field of new technologies. Equally noteworthy is the work of the Koninklijke Academie voor Neerlandse Taal-en Letterkunde (The Royal Academy of the Dutch Language and Literature), which is also responsible for the study and promotion of the language.
