Kyrgyz is a Turkish language active throughout the region of Central Asia. It is a common Turkic language belonging to the Kipchak branch of the language family. In Kyrgyzstan, where it is the official language, it uses the Cyrillic alphabet. In the Xinjiang region of China, where it is a minority language, it uses the Arabic alphabet.

It is also an agglutinative language, where each suffix added to the stem indicates only one meaning; these suffixes attach to the word stem one after another in a set order.

Although almost everyone in Kyrgyzstan understands Russian, and many Russian words have entered the language, there are places where Kyrgyz is the definitive mother tongue and Russian is most definitely a second language. The language is generally considered to be easier to learn than Russian, with a smaller vocabulary and lack of stress in spoken form.
