Chuchotage or whispered interpreting is a form of interpreting similar to simultaneous interpreting. Chuchotage involves interpreting (translating) a speaker’s dialogue directly to the person interested in hearing the translation. This type of interpreting (oral translation) takes place in real time; at the same time as the speaker is talking, the interpreter whispers the speech content or conversation into the recipient’s ear. As with simultaneous interpreting, liaison interpreting is conducted without interrupting the communication, thus the total duration of the speech is not increased.
In addition, another of its advantages is that technical equipment does not need to be utilised (headgear, interpretation booths, etc.) in order to complete the translation task successfully, it is therefore more economical. Since this form of interpreting is transmitted in a very low tone of voice, whispering, it is advisable that it takes place with the fewest possible recipients, never more than two or three people, so that this does not affect the quality of the interpretation.
