Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a sovereign state located in northern Europe, bordered by the Barents Sea to the north, Finland and Russia to the northeast, Sweden to the east, the Skagerrak Strait to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It forms the Scandinavian peninsula together with Sweden, Finland and part of Russia.
However, the country’s territory includes not only this western part of the Scandinavian peninsula, but also Jan Mayen, the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard and the sub-Antarctic Bouvet Island. Norway also claims a section of Antarctica known as Queen Maud Land. The total area is 385,156 square kilometres and has 5,110,000 inhabitants.
ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEM
The administrative system divides the country into three levels: national; provincial, i.e. provinces, counties or districts; and municipal, i.e. municipalities or communes. It is currently subdivided into 11 counties or provinces, known in Norwegian as fylk. These are further subdivided into 356 communes or municipalities. The governmental power of the province is represented by the governor or fylkesmann. The representative bodies of the provinces are the fylketing, elected by the population, and the executive bodies of the provinces are the provincial council, which consists of the provincial councillors, who have been elected by the fylketing.
SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT
The Norwegian system of government is a parliamentary monarchy based on a democracy with a parliamentary system of government. Executive power is vested in the King, who acts as head of state. These powers are granted by the Constitution, but in practice they are exercised by the government. The King has a ceremonial role with some reserve powers. After an election, the majority leader is usually appointed prime minister (head of government) by the King, with the approval of Parliament.
The legislative branch is represented by the Norwegian Parliament, known in Norwegian as the Storting, which acts as Norway’s legislative body. This Parliament is unicameral and consists of 169 representatives. Members are elected for a four-year term on the basis of proportional representation. Parliament cannot be dissolved before the end of the four-year term.
ECONOMY
The country’s economy is characterised by high prosperity and is based on welfare capitalism, which is defined by a combination of free market activity and government intervention. It is a country endowed with natural resource wealth – oil, hydropower, fish, forests and minerals – and is largely dependent on its own oil production and international oil prices, with oil and gas accounting for a third of exports. In addition, Norway is one of the world’s largest exporters of fuel and fuel products.
Norway is also the 35th largest economy in terms of GDP. Also, as GDP is a great indicator of the standard of living, Norway is ranked 4th out of 196 countries in the GDP per capita ranking, which means that the inhabitants have a very good standard of living, and the fact that the average Norwegian salary is among the highest in the world.
