China is the largest country in East Asia and the most populous in the world with more than 1.3 billion people. It is located in the east of the Asian continent and, together with Russia, is the country with the most land borders in the world, bordering 14 countries. These are Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Vietnam.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE IN CHINA

Its administrative structure is organised on three main levels. These are the provincial, district and cantonal levels. At the first level are the provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities under central jurisdiction. The second level refers to autonomous prefectures, districts, autonomous districts and municipalities. Finally, the third level comprises all cantons, ethnic minority cantons and towns. The municipalities are under central jurisdiction. Relatively large municipalities are further subdivided into urban and suburban districts.

Autonomous prefectures are subdivided into districts, autonomous districts and municipalities. Autonomous regions, autonomous prefectures and autonomous districts are places inhabited by ethnic minorities that enjoy autonomy. The Constitution provides for the possibility for the State, in case of necessity, to establish special administrative regions, directly subordinate to the Central Government.

TERRITORIAL DIVISION OF CHINA

Currently, the country as a whole has 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities under central jurisdiction and 2 special administrative regions.
The People’s Republic of China is, according to its own constitution, a socialist state under a people’s democratic dictatorship. China is characterised by a centralised unitary state, fully administered by the Communist Party of China.

POLITICS IN CHINA

Executive power is overseen by a collegial body endowed with important powers. This is the Council of State Affairs, under which government commissions, ministries and other bodies with ministerial rank are placed. According to the Constitution, the CAE is the “supreme administrative organ” of the Chinese state, although most important decisions are made by the political bureau of the Chinese Communist Party. The CAE plays an important economic role.

The President is head of state and is elected by the National People’s Congress. He also serves as general secretary of the Communist Party and represents China in international institutions. On the other hand, the prime minister is in charge of directing and controlling government action, assisted by four deputy prime ministers. The CAE also includes five state councillors who, like the deputy prime ministers, have powers over a group of ministries or commissions of ministerial rank. The secretary general of the government also belongs to the CAE.

OTHER INFORMATION

On the other hand, the legislature is characterised by its unicameral nature. Power is vested in the National People’s Assembly (NPA), which meets once a year in plenary session. It is made up of some 3,000 deputies, who are elected every five years by indirect suffrage by local authorities. The deputies represent the 23 provinces, the 5 regions and the 4 autonomous municipalities.

CHINA’S ECONOMY

China’s economy, whose economic system is the socialist market economy, is the second largest economy in the world in terms of nominal gross domestic product. It is also the world’s largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity, according to the International Monetary Fund. It is the fastest growing country in the world since the 1980s, with an average annual growth rate of almost 10 % over the last 38 years.

It has an economy linked to international industrial and financial markets and is the world centre for the manufacture of all kinds of products. It is the undisputed world’s largest industrial power and exporter of goods. Private companies account for 90 % of the total number of companies in the country. The Chinese state, in turn, controls and monopolises its strategic sectors and maintains significant economic regulation, with China’s largest companies being largely state-owned.

CHINESE CULTURE

Their culture is one of the oldest and most complex in the world. The area in which this culture is predominant covers a wide geographical region with a great variety of customs and traditions between villages, towns or provinces. Some of the exponents of Chinese culture are its mythology, philosophy, music and art. It adopted much of the surrounding culture, such as Buddhism from India, giving rise to Zen Buddhism. China was the cradle of two important philosophical currents: Confucianism and Taoism.
