Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in Oceania, the largest of the continents with 7 692 024 km^{2 of land area}. Followed by Papua New Guinea with 462 840 km². It is also the sixth largest country in the world and the largest island nation. Its capital is Canberra, located in the southeast of the nation.

It has no land borders with any country and is bounded only by seas and oceans: to the north by the Timor, Arafura and Coral Seas; to the south and west by the Indian Ocean; and to the east by the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea. It is on the flattest continent on Earth, with an average altitude of 300 metres above sea level. The most populous city is Sydney, home to almost five million people, a fifth of the country’s total population (25 641 700 inhabitants). Administratively, it is divided into six states and two federated territories: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. Each state, except Queensland, has a bicameral system of government.

AUSTRALIAN POLITICS

The system of government is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. As part of the Commonwealth of Nations, King Charles III of England is head of state. It is represented in the country by the Governor General at the federal level and the governor of each state at the regional level. Legislative power is vested in the Australian Parliament, which consists of the Queen, the Senate (76 senators) and the House of Representatives (150 members).

The executive consists of the head of state (the Queen) and the head of government (the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, leader of the Liberal Party ). In terms of foreign policy,  is a member of the Commonwealth, the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) and various regional organisations such as APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation). Its relations with the European Union are governed by the “Australia/EU Partnership Agreement: Joint Declaration”. Moreover, overall, the EU is one of the nation’s main trading partners.

CULTURE AND TOURISM IN AUSTRALIA

Australian culture is shaped by the influence of the Aboriginal peoples who inhabited the land before explorations from various European countries arrived. It is also influenced by the successive waves of immigration that have arrived in the country and live there today. Some of its best-known inhabitants, and also one of the reasons to visit, are the kangaroo (named after the Guugu Yimithirr language of the Aboriginal people) and the koala. Another major attraction is the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the northeast of the territory.

Sydney also has much to offer, most notably the Sydney Opera House, the grand building whose roof resembles huge white shells, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Of particular note is Uluru-Kata Tijuta National Park, home to the great red rock Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock. This is probably the best known and most photographed landscape on the island, as well as being a sacred place for the Anangu tribe.
