language interpretation Language interpretation facilitates oral communication between people who speak different languages. Amongst the different techniques are consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, bilateral interpretation (also knows as liaison or ad hoc), whispered interpretation and sight translation (a quick oral translation of a written document). The most well-known forms are simultaneous and consecutive interpretation. In consecutive interpretation, the interpreter takes notes while the speaker gives his/her speech. The speaker can take frequent breaks for the interpretation or he/she can give the entire speech while the interpreter takes notes and then later translates it into the target language. On the other hand, in simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter immediately translates orally (interprets) via a microphone (connected to a special interpretation console) the speaker´s speech which is then heard through headphones. Simultaneous translation is usually performed from booths where the interpreters work in pairs on the same language pair. Consecutive interpretation is loosing ground as simultaneous translation wins more. The latter started being used in conferences and courtrooms, and is being used in more and more contexts, such as videoconferences and radio and television broadcasts. Currently, its use in videoconference is being studied. Amongst its many formats are conference interpretation, courtroom interpretation, and social interpretation, etc.
